Lazarus and Folkman's interpretation of stress focuses on the transaction between people and their external environment (known as the Transactional Model). The model conceptualizes stress as a result of how a stressor is appraised and how a person appraises his/her resources to cope with the stressor.
It used human subjects to develop the model, focuses on how individuals interpret stress differently, and promotes managing stressors through psychological coping mechanisms. Limitations of Lazarus-Folkman Model. Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman suggested in 1981 that stress can be thought of as resulting from an "imbalance between demands and resources" or as occurring when "pressure exceeds one's perceived ability to cope". Stress management was developed and premised on the idea that stress is not a direct response to a stressor but rather one's resources and ability to cope mediate the stress Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping a model that helps track and interpret an individuals subjective psychological response to stress, suggesting it is a subjective transaction between an incoming stressor and personal and environmental factors specific to an individual In the Lazarus and Folkman transactional model of stress and coping, any response to a stressor has two main components, namely an appraisal of the severity of a stressor which is encountered, and an appraisal of how well the stressor can be managed by the individual. According to Lazarus and Folkman (1984), there are also three types of primary appraisal: (a) irrelevant, where the individual has no vested interest in the transaction or results; (b) benign positive, in which the individual assumes that the situation is positive with no potential negative results to his or her well-being; and (c) stressful, where the individual only perceives negative Purpose: To critically review the research based on Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) stress and coping model, in respect to the coping of those caring for persons with dementia in the community, in an attempt to establish its implications for interventions aimed at improving caregiver adjustment. Lazarus states that stress is experienced when a person perceives that the “demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilise."this is called the 'transactional model of stress and coping.' Neither the environmental event nor the persons response defines stress, rather the individuals perception of the psychological situation is the critical factor. Lazarus & Folkman’s Transactional model of stress (1984) • Transaction (interaction) occurs between a person & the environment • Stress results from an imbalance between (a) demands & (b) resources • Thus we become stressed when demands (pressure) exceeds our resources (our ability to cope & mediate stress) • Thus the interpretation of the stressful event is more important than the event itself Lazarus & Folkman Transactional model of stress & coping - VCE Psychology - YouTube.
